Voting tactically?

Although they might deny it, many of the politicians are asking people to vote tactically, sorry I think they may have called it intelligently, to ensure that whoever they are gains the most seats. Sometimes, they say, you need to vote to keep people out.

I think that is a load of absolute bollocks. As far as I see it your vote represents what you believe in. Who you choose to vote for demonstrates your broad agreement with their policies (or most of their policies, no one party is perfect after all). If your vote is used to 'Get Labour Out' or to 'Stop the Tories Getting In' all you are doing is playing into the politicians hands and wasting the opportunity to say 'I agree with this'.

Take voting Green for example. They have no chance of winning the election. But should you choose to vote for the Green Party then you are saying that the Environment is an incredibly important issue to you. If everyone who believes that votes for the Green Party, they still won't win, but they will get enough support that will make the other parties think 'huh, this environment issue thing is obviously important, how can we attract those voters by including it into our own policies'. But if no one voted for the Green Party because they didn't have a chance of winning how would the politicians ever know that environmental issues are something that matters to us?

Likewise with the big three parties. Whoever you vote for you are making a statement. If you vote for a party you don't agree with what statement are you making? That you agree with their policies. Whichever way you look at it this election is going to be close. The politicians are going to have to look at each others policies and work out a way to represent us all. You should make your vote count by making a positive statement and voting for what you believe.

  1. Interesting as this election has more of an "American" feel to it, and people seems to be voting more for a personality than a party.

  2. I disagree I'm afraid.

I do vote for what I believe in, but no party has an exact policy that fits my beliefs. I'm somewhere between Labour and Lib Dem personally, but come down more on the side of Labour.

However every fiber of my being is against the Conservatives. So to me the function of my vote as a means of keeping someone out of power is more important than its function of putting someone in power.

  3. Until we have fair representation through PR then tactical voting is just about the only way voters have to influence the outcome in a FPTP system. It's not right, but if your ideology lies with a party running fourth in your constituency there really isn't any point in voting for them except to save them losing their deposit. Is this democracy? Not by a long shot. But sadly it's all we have to work with. In an ideal world the countrywide percentage of Green voters would see their votes return the same percentage of Green MPs (in Scotland this was less than 2% - but it got us 2 Green MSPs in a house of 129). As things stand it's all very well voting Green because your conscience tells you to but if in the meantime the BNP (for example) get in... oh I despair for this country with its antiquated power preserving mockery of democracy.

Then I go read something like this... http://voteforpolicies.org.uk/ and realise PR could give us (in this scenario) around 60 BNP and 60 UKIP MPs - and emigrating looks like the only alternative!

    Anyone for a benevolent dictatorship?

  4. This is tough. I started writing an epic comment and decided that was inappropriate so I've gone off now to post it. I'm not sure we entirely agree this time around Brits and that fact shocks me as I would have agreed with my whole heart a month ago. Thank you for writing this though, it is brilliant. It has pushed me to make my final choice before heading off to the village hall.

  5. Morning. I'm just off to cast my vote. We've never had so many people turning up on the doorstep and persuading us to listen to why we should vote for them. Apparently we live in a seat that could swing (how exciting), so it's all to play for. What worried me is that none of the candidates had any real Green policy, other than mumbling about encouraging bike use. And when I mentioned how difficult it was to get into local schools, one of the candidates mentioned building new Portacabins. Really reassuring...

  6. I have no idea who to vote for as the party that I would normally vote for (the Welsh one -PLAID) have no hope of making a difference i.e there will not be a Plaid Cymru Majority in Parliament. So do I vote for them or do I vote for one of the big ones??
    Love the new name btw

  7. I am writing this at 8.35 on the 7th - so the outcome is prety clear (ie the outcome is so NOT clear) but I do think people in the end voted with their heart - those lucky ones who were in fact able to vote (and not turned away because the polling stations 'couldn't cope'??!!??). And thnakyou for your kind comment - I think my break will only be temporary but I will still be popping over to read yours - loved the old one and have no doubt that I will love the new one even more!! Thankyou!!!

  8. OK, firstly CONGRATULATIONS! Secondly, love the new name (I knew it was you, of course I did), and thirdly, the election. I don't know what to to say, really - especially since it's now Friday night and as far as I can tell it's still all up in the air...

  9. Modern Mother - it does feel like that, but I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed as the bargaining now begins!

Dan - interesting. I understand the desire, but doesn't that mean that the Conservatives define you - you are everything that they are not, but they control it?

Mrs W - love democracy as long as everyone votes the same way as me! Great to see a Green MP in Brighton - it does happen as long as people vote for what they believe. But I am also a real idealist...

    MD - loved your post.

A&U - Scary how little some candidates know about their own policies.

BNM - Vote for what you think, the people you like the best. I think your vote should represent what you believe.

Anon - hope to see more of you soon! I'll miss your blog. x

Potty Mummy - think it is going to stay there fora while. Like your Russian cloud scatterers.
