Overheard at the playground this afternoon

2 small boys, aged no more than 5, hanging off the climbing frame (not my boys, for once, but could so easily be).

Small Boy A: Your Mum just said you are going in 2 minutes

Small Boy B: Don't worry, she doesn't mean it.

Small Boy A: How do you know?

Small Boy B: She's just starting talking to some grown ups.

How do they manage to suss us out so early on?

  2. It's always two minutes isn't it? I say the exact same to my two and they've started to throw it back at me when I tell them to shift it; "I'll just be two minutes Mum.' Hmmm

  3. It's one of those adult-child unfairnesses. If I say "we're going now" and then bump into a friend and start a conversation, "now" can mean 10 minutes or 20 minutes. But if I say "we're going now" and one of the children has another go on something that takes 30 seconds, that's not acceptable and I say "now means NOW". Sucks to be a child!

  4. Very true. They know us better than ourselves.
And Iota puts it very well, too.

  6. !!! I have a friend whose little girl thinks that 'ten minutes' is actually an hour. As that's always how long she has to play when her mother says, 'We're going in ten minutes.'

  11. Or just as "We'll see" can go either way ("yes, you can probably have it/do that" versus "No, not a chance") depending on your tone of voice and how distracted you are when saying it.

  12. I am certain my daughter sas something similar around the same age. And when I log onto the internet and tell her I won't be long, she knows I'm lying!

  13. My daughter is imitating me already. She's only 18 months. I have the feeling I am in for a little bit of trouble...
